Best Deodorant to Prevent Stress Sweat

Best Deodorant for Stress Sweat

In this article I’ll be taking a look at the best deodorants for stress sweat.

Stress sweat is not the same type of perspiration as your run-of-the-mill active sweat; as such, it needs to be treated differently.

I’ve tested a stack of deodorants and antiperspirants and came up with three of the best.

Before I get into those, let’s take a look at what stress sweat is and how to treat it effectively.

What is Stress Sweat?

There are three main types of sweat.

The first is heat sweat, most often caused by exposure to the sun or high temperatures. The next is exertion stress; laborers, athletes, and weight trainers find this one extremely common.

Then there’s stress sweat; as the name implies, it occurs when the person is placed under nervous or highly anxious times.

It differs from the other two because it comes from different glands in the body. The apocrine glands are located under the arms and in the groin area. When the body is placed under extreme stress, the glands open and produce sweat.

This type of sweat contains food that results in bacterial growth, producing a nasty, often sulfurous odor.

How Do You Treat Stress Sweat?

There are some drastic ways to treat stress sweat, from completely shaving all the hair under your arms to washing with antibacterial soap numerous times a day.

The simplest solution is to treat it with an antiperspirant specifically designed to treat stress sweat.

I ensured that all the ones I tried were designed for this issue, and I was impressed with most. There were one or two that I found useless, but the bulk did what they advertised.

And now, here’s my overall favorite, SweatBlock Antiperspirant, followed by a close runner-up for best and a budget option.

SweatBlock Antiperspirant to Prevent Stress Sweat

Best overall

Sweatblock is my hands-down favorite for stress sweat as it actually works in advance to deter it. Sure, I’ll still get stressed, but the people around me won’t know it.

What the Marketing Says

SweatBlock is advertised as a clinical-strength antiperspirant that eliminates wet armpits for up to seven days.

It’s a dermatologist-tested formula with the active ingredient being 15% aluminum chloride.

The roll-on is marketed as being strong enough to eliminate stress sweat, hormonal sweating, and even hyperhidrosis.

SweatBlock is advertised as great for men, women, and teenagers and lives up to those claims.

It retails at around $25, but remember, it’s not a daily application, so this works out to be an excellent price.

How to Apply It

Sweatblock is a little different from other antiperspirants on the market as it’s only needed once a week and gets to work immediately.

The idea is that you roll it sparingly onto your armpits around 30 minutes before you go to bed, giving it time to air.

So, for example, apply it on a Sunday night. Monday morning, you wake up and wash it off, the active ingredients have already begun to do their work, and for up to a week, your sweat stress shouldn’t be evident to others.

No more wet armpits; even better, that awful odor is gone.

Now, of course, not everyone is the same, and it may not last the full seven days, and the company is transparent about that.

How it Affects Your Clothes

There’s nothing worse for me than having damp armpits under my business suit. And I’m delighted to say that I couldn’t find any stains on my clothes when wearing SweatBlock.

I applied it Sunday night, and Monday, I was dressed in presentable clothing all day, and there wasn’t a single stain on my clothing.

SweatBlock offers a “Dry Shirt Guarantee” with a 100% refund if you’re unhappy. I, for one, won’t need to apply for this. I love the results.

Scent and Odor Protection

I’m a big fan of the fact that Sweatblock is unscented. I prefer to choose my own cologne rather than smelling like a deodorant brand.

Perspiration

As an antiperspirant, SweatBlock is designed to prevent sweating. And when I tested it, I was very impressed.

I’m one of those fortunate people that doesn’t get too stressed too often, but lately, things have been getting on top of me, and I’ve been having bouts of stress sweat. So this was an ideal opportunity to try SweatBlock.

I must admit that I could tell it was weakening by Friday, so I applied the second dose a day earlier on Saturday night, just to be sure. And so far, so good. Overall, Sweatblock completely prevented my stress sweat.

How it Feels on the Skin

There is a disclaimer by SweatBlock on most of its marketing that, as a high-strength product, there may be slight skin irritation. The suggestion is to test it first on a small area of your body before using it in its entirety.

There was no issue for me; it felt cool when I first applied it, but there wasn’t that sticky, greasy sensation I’ve experienced with other roll-ons.

Secret Clinical, 1.6 oz

Runner-up for Best

Secret Clinical was the first deodorant I tested, and if it weren’t for SweatBlock, it would have remained my favorite. This deodorant met all my needs; so let’s take a deeper look at why.

What the Marketing Says

Secret Clinical contains odor-neutralizing molecules to fight stress sweat.

It’s clinically stress-tested and formulated with 4X the stress-sweat protection of other brands.

Secret Clinical offers the wetness protection of a prescription-strength product but as an over-the-counter item.

It retails for around $9.

How to Apply It

Secret Clinical comes in a range of application options:

  • Aerosol (my preferred choice)
  • Roll-on
  • Clear Gel
  • Solid
  • Smooth Solid
  • Invisible Solid
  • Advances Solid

As directed, I sprayed it on before bed. The intention here is that as my body temperature lowers, I sweat less; therefore, little to none of the product is removed overnight.

I didn’t use much of it, only two quick sprays, as the manufacturer suggests.

The next morning, I didn’t need to apply it again and spent the whole day sweat and odor free.

How it Affects Your Clothes

I like aerosols as they rarely leave a mark on clothes, and Secret Clinical left nothing, either.

As a heavy-duty stress protector, my armpits remained dry all day.

Scent and Odor Protection

Secret Clinical has the largest range of deodorant scents I’ve ever seen:

  • Hypoallergenic –
  • Unscented
  • Ooh-La-La Lavender
  • Serene Citrus
  • Calming Aloe
  • Fresh Water Orchid
  • Fearlessly Fresh
  • Powder Protection
  • Light & Fresh
  • All Day Fresh (Waterproof)
  • Marathon Fresh

Naturally, I went with the unscented one, leaving me to wear whatever cologne I wanted.

As for odor prevention, it works. My armpits produced none of that awful stress-sweat smell, and I’m sure everyone around me appreciated it as much as I did.

Perspiration

Clinical Secret prevents perspiration. My armpits didn’t produce any sweat stains for the whole day.

It’s marketed as 48-hour protection, but I did find that part way through the second day, I was beginning to feel like it was wearing off. In my case, 36 hours was the peak.

However, what I did try was to spray before bed and again in the morning of the first day, and it lasted two days.

How it Feels on the Skin

I like aerosols as they leave no residue or sticky feeling on the skin, and I experienced none of this with Secret Clinical.

The product is made with skin-soothing conditioners and pH-balanced minerals so people with sensitive skin can use it confidently.

Ingredients

Secret Clinical contains one active ingredient: 20% aluminum zirconium trichlorohydrex Gly (anhydrous).

The inactive ingredients are:

  • Cyclopentasiloxane
  • PPG-14 butyl ether
  • Cyclodextrin
  • Synthetic wax
  • Tribehenin
  • Fragrance
  • Dimethicone
  • Petrolatum
  • Paraffin

Secret is one of the few body care companies that is PETA-certified cruelty-free.

What Other People Say

With a rating of 4.4/5, Secret Clinical is extremely popular.

Customers love the all-day sweat and odor protection, with many claiming it to be superior to most other brands they’ve tried.

Some users needed to experiment with the different scents to find the most suitable one.

The Verdict

I love Secret Clinical deodorant for stress-sweat prevention. It ticks all the boxes for me. It comes as an aerosol, there is an unscented version, and it works for up to 48 hours if applied correctly.

At around $9, it’s at the high end of the price scale, but it’s absolutely worth it for the boost of confidence that stress-sweating requires.

Pros
  • 4X the stress-sweat protection of other brands
  • A wide range of applications and scents
  • Lasts up to 48 hours
  • No more stress-sweat odor
  • Zero stains on clothing
Cons
  • Scents may be overwhelming for some users

NIVEA MEN Intense Protection Fresh Roll On Deodorant (50ml)

Best Budget

Deodorants can get expensive, but only sometimes. Nivea Men Intense Protection can prevent stress sweat for less than $4 a stick.

What the Marketing Says

Nivea Men Intense Protection roll-on is marketed as a 72-hour antiperspirant that prevents sweat and body odor.

It’s dermatologist tested containing a dual active formula with two antibacterial actives.

The scent is described as ‘masculine.’

It’s advertised as retailing for $3.59, but I’ve seen bulk pricing lower than that.

How to Apply It

After my first shower in the morning, I applied the roll-on under my arms with a couple of short strokes.

It takes a bit of time to dry, so I waited around 15 minutes before putting on my shirt.

How it Affects Your Clothes

I’m pleased to say that I spent the entire day with no stained armpits.

I was concerned that Nivea Men Intense might cause those streaky white patches that other deodorants do, but it doesn’t.

Scent and Odor Protection

As I mentioned, I prefer unscented products. The ‘fresh masculine scent’ of the Nivea Men Intense is a little too overwhelming for me. I found that I couldn’t wear any cologne as it all clashed.

The good news is that there’s no more stress sweat odor; then again, the scent may be overpowering that too.

Perspiration

For the entire day, my armpits remained dry.

I wanted to test the 72-hour claim, so the next morning after my shower, I skipped the application. By about lunchtime, however, I started to notice small sweat patches appearing, and by the time I got home, I felt like I wasn’t being protected anymore.

My impression is that this is a daily roll-on, not a three-dayer. It could be different for other people, of course.

How it Feels on the Skin

When I first applied Nivea Men Intense, I found it to be a little sticky; after time, it evaporated into the skin, and that sensation was gone.

The product doesn’t contain any ethyl-alcohol, so it’s unlikely to cause any skin irritations. I certainly didn’t experience any.

Ingredients

The list of ingredients of the Nivea Men Intense is surprisingly long, beginning with the two antibacterial actives:

  • Aluminum Chlorohydrate
  • Aluminum Sesquichlorohydrate
  • Water
  • Linalool
  • Limonene
  • Steareth-2
  • Steareth-21
  • Parfum
  • Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone
  • Magnesium Aluminum Silicate
  • Persea Gratissima Oil
    PPG-15 Stearyl Ether
  • Trisodium EDTA

Beiersdorf, the company behind the Nivea brand, states that none of its products are tested on animals.

What Other People Say

Nivea Men Intense Protection Roll on rates highly at 4.6/5.

Unlike me, most customers like the scent, and almost all of them are thrilled with the price point.

Not lasting the total 72 hours as advertised and the sticky feeling are some of the less positive comments.

The Verdict

For its extremely low price and as a daily application, the Nivea Men Intense Protection roll-on is excellent value for money.

My only issue is with the heavy scent, but I appear to be in the minority there.

Pros
  • Contains two antibacterial actives
  • Fresh masculine scent
  • Lasts up to 72 hours (advertised)
  • Prevents wet armpits
  • Eliminates body odor

Cons
  • Feels a little sticky after application
