The Tried and Tested best deodorant for kids
“As a mother of two young children I was surprised when I began smelling the unmistakable scent of body odor after an especially active and warm day. I was a little confused as I thought they were too young to need deodorant but it’s actually quite normal”. According to certified pediatrician Dr. Jennifer Trachtenberg. Some children will need to begin using deodorant earlier than others and it can start as early as seven years old.
Fortunately there’s a variety of deodorants for kids specially formulated for children, made to be gentle on their skin, completely safe and of course to stop sweat and body odor.
To save you time myself and a few mothers did a few different tests and also researched the ingredients used in children’s deodorants and found two that stand apart from the rest.
We found Tom’s Of Maine Wicked Cool was the best deodorant for girls, and KIDS 100% Natural Organic Healthy Roll On was by far the best deodorant for boys.
None the less I’ve written in depth reviews on 8 different deodorants including the ones listed above. All of them are trusted and made with safe ingredients and will get the job done.
I’ve broken this article into two parts, the first half for girls and the second half for boys.

Toms of Maine Natural Wicked Cool Deodorant for Girls
While this deodorant is marketed for teens it’s perfectly fine for young girls as well. For my second choice I decided to choose a deodorant that is a lot more affordable but still one of the best deodorant for kids.
Teen Girls does contain aluminium, so just remember it’s not ideal for children with sensitive skin. The other side of the coin though is that it’s very affordable and very effective. You won’t be smelling your kids body odor any more and any problems they had with sweating will definitely be put to rest.
It also provides a great fresh smell that doesn’t seem too artificial but a scent that stops any type of odor. Teen Girls brings 24 hour protection as a deodorant stick. One benefit is this deodorant has overwhelming positive customer reviews. All though this isn’t a natural or organic deodorant, it’s still safe to use for children and free of parabens.

TBH deodorants for kids
TBH for kids was a personal favorite of my youngest child, formulated using arrowroot, activated charcoal, coconut oil, sodium and witch hazel. This natural fragrance is gentle on all children’s skin.
This version is unscented although there are fragrance versions from the same brand. It uses a blend of baking soda like most natural antiperspirants. To stop sweat and subsequently any bad smells from arising. I have to say this is one of the best I’ve used and my child found the actually packaging the most interesting part.
It seems to block pits properly and the content is most made of natural ingredients. If you aren’t on a budget when it comes to your children then this is one of the best choices.
- Great scent
- Isn’t an antiperspirant
KIDS 100% Natural Organic Healthy Roll On Deodorant for Boys
Another aluminum and paraben free deodorant for kids, I found this to be very effective at preventing body odor and excessive sweating. It’s scientifically proven this deodorant contains no carcinogens or chemicals. Entirely natural and great for a child that’s just coming up into puberty so nothing messes with their body’s natural rhythms. I’m not entirely sure but I think they use arrowroot powder in their formula. This is a great alternative to aluminum for preventing sweat.
This deodorant for kids includes a vast array of natural ingredients, such as Rose Water, Willowherb, Chamomile flowers and aluminum free baking soda. I know some of their other formula’s contained coconut oil which I found to be very pleasant.
I haven’t noticed any problems with stopping sweat or poor body odor when my kids used this product, again my only will gripe is that it’s a lot more expensive than conventional deodorants and it’s price might be out of reach for any parent on a budget.
My boys loved the smell of this deodorant and I have just about no complaints.
- Natural formula
- Great smelling scent
- Some customers complained of it not preventing sweat
Tom's of Maine Wicked Cool Deodorant for Boys
I decided to include tom’s of maine boys deodorant because it’s simply such a trustworthy brand that deserves a second recommendation. The girls loved their version so I thought it was right to include it.
Tom’s of Maine is preservative free, aluminum free and paraben free. You can trust that only the best ingredients will be applied to your kid’s armpits. This version is unscented but still does a good job at masking body odor, I didn’t notice my boys sweating excessively on a hot and active day, which I put up with the deodorant they were wearing.
Another benefit is that there aren’t any artificial fragrances in this deodorant, which can cause uncomfortable irritation for those with sensitive skin.
Lastly this natural deodorant is very affordable compared to some of the others I included in this list. I recommend you start using this kids deodorant if you’re on a budget but still want something that’s natural and can act as an antiperspirant.
- Animal friendly
- Some customers complained about the smell
Keep it Kind Fresh Kidz Natural Roll On Deodorant
While this kids deodorant doesn’t contain any antiperspirant properties it still provides a fresh scent and will keep any pits sweat and odor free. It’s great for children growing up. I would recommend transitioning to a different deodorant in high school because they may need something stronger when puberty ramps up.
My child had no problems with this deodorant, it’s very easy to apply and smooth on the skin. Although it’s not organic it’s perfect for children from seven to thirteen years old.
It provides 24 hour protection and only needs to be applied once a day. My seven year old loved using this deodorant as he says ‘it has a cool scent that keeps me fresh’. Your child might prefer a different smell but I do agree it’s scent is unique and fresh without smelling too artificial.
If you and your child are animal lovers, luckily for you keep it kind is cruelty free and vegan friendly. Some of it’s ingredients include baking soda, sodium and gluten free. Customer reviews on amazon are nearly all positive and it seems there’s very little wrong with this deodorant. We couldn’t seem to find out what specific fragrance it was.
- Great smelling scent
- 24 hour protection
- A little expensive
Fresh Kids Deodorant for Boys Ages 6 +
I chose this option for the younger crowd, although it’s uncommon some children will begin using deodorant at 6 years. It shouldn’t be too much of a concern. When they’re in such a young age bracket it’s very important you choose something soft on their skin. It’s very easy to irritate young children’s skin either by what the product contains or overapplying.
We chose Fresh Kids because it’s made for younger ages, very gentle on the skin and doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals or preservatives. We found the scent very pleasant and it did a quality job at stopping sweat and any bad smells.
There’s definitely cheaper options available all though this type is great for the younger ages.
- Specifically made for younger ages
- Great scent
- Free of all unnatural ingredients
- A little expensive
Why You Should Consider Natural Deodorant for kids body odor
A lot of parents are becoming more concerned about what is actually being applied to their children’s skin. Long lasting is great but what’s the long term effects? A lot of the better but more expensive deodorants exclude things such as parabens, aluminum or propylene glycol and instead use ingredients such as baking soda, arrowroot powder and other essential oils. This makes deodorants for kids a lot healthier and less risky.
While these healthier alternatives might not provide the best protection compared to their conventional counterparts. They still provide adequate protection for your kids pits.
What deodorants are safe for kids?
Let’s first understand what’s the difference between deodorants and antiperspirants. Antiperspirants work by clogging the body’s sweat glands or pores using deodorant salts so that it prevents sweating. While deodorants don’t stop sweating but just prevent bad odors from arising. Health organisations consider both of these safe but there’s been rising concerns on aluminum in products linked to diseases like alazeihmers or breast cancer.
All experts agree that the largest problem using deodorants and antiperspirants is skin sensitivity. Children with sensitive skin could develop a rash or red irritated skin from application. That’s why it’s best to choose fragrance free products, maybe try using hypoallergenic deodorants that won’t contain parabens, triclosan, artificial dyes or aluminum.
In conclusion if your children need a safe deodorant to help them with the smells their ever changing bodies are producing, this guide will keep you on track to find something non toxic and keep them smelling sensational.
